Levia vs. Rosebud: two very different AI journals (2026)

How does the AI experience differ?

They start from opposite ends. Rosebud is chat-based: a session feels like a guided conversation with a coach, and the product positions itself around therapist-informed guidance. It is the most conversational AI coaching in the category, and its long-term memory — carried across iOS, Android, and the web — lets it pick up threads from earlier sessions on whichever device you open next.

Levia is a journal first. You write — or speak, with live transcription — and a reflective companion responds inside a classic journaling flow, next to templates, widgets, streaks, box breathing, and a Time Capsule. Its companion remembers what matters within the app. And to be honest: Rosebud's cloud memory across devices is a genuine strength that Levia, with no web version, doesn't replicate.

Privacy: on-device option vs cloud-first

This is the deepest difference between the two, and it's a fact of architecture, not an accusation. Rosebud is cloud-first by design: entries are processed on servers, and that is precisely what enables its web app and cross-device memory. Its privacy policy names OpenAI, Anthropic, and Groq as AI providers and describes data as anonymized for AI processing. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and Rosebud's data handling is HIPAA-aligned, including a Business Associate Agreement with Google.

Levia flips the model. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence — iPhone 15 Pro and newer — the AI runs on-device through Apple's Foundation Models, so your journal text never leaves the phone. On iPhones without Apple Intelligence, you get a built-in offline reflective companion plus an optional private cloud AI that is strictly opt-in and off by default, with zero retention, never used for training, and never linked to an identity. There are no accounts, no ads, and no trackers. Individual entries can be locked via the Secure Enclave (P-256): they open only with Face ID and are excluded from AI, search, and export. Backups are encrypted (AES-GCM, PBKDF2 with 600,000 iterations), and you can export everything as PDF or Markdown.

Neither approach is wrong — they trade different things. Rosebud's servers buy convenience and continuity across devices; Levia's on-device option buys the certainty that, on supported iPhones, your words stay in your pocket.

Mood tracking and insights

Levia treats mood as structured data: five levels, fifteen emotions, and ten lifestyle factors, rolled into weekly insights, charts, and a calendar view. Rosebud offers weekly insights and analytics too. Both apps support voice journaling; in Levia it comes with live transcription as you speak.

What do they cost?

Levia costs $9.99 per month or $49.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial. Rosebud has a free version, and its premium tier Bloom is about $12.99 per month, cheaper on annual billing at roughly $8.99 per month equivalent — figures as of July 2026.

Two honest notes. Rosebud's free tier means you can start today without paying, which Levia doesn't match — there's a time-limited trial, not a free plan. If you pay annually, though, Levia's $49.99 per year is the lower total of the two.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Rosebud if…

• You want the most conversational AI coaching in the category — sessions that feel like guided conversations, with therapist-informed guidance.
• You're on Android, want a web app, or want your journal on more than one device.
• Mature long-term AI memory across devices matters to you.
• You'd rather start on a free plan than a time-limited trial.

Pick Levia if…

• You want the option of AI that runs entirely on your iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro and newer with Apple Intelligence), so journal text never leaves the phone.
• You don't want an account — Levia has none, and no ads or trackers either.
• You want individual entries sealed in hardware (Secure Enclave, Face ID) and excluded from AI, search, and export.
